Kantar BrandZ 2026: AI lifts the world’s top brands, and why meaningful difference matters more

· 5 min read · The ADDs team

In short

Kantar BrandZ 2026 values the world’s 100 most valuable brands at US$13.1 trillion, up 22%. Google returned to No. 1 for the first time since 2018, and ChatGPT grew 285%. Kantar argues that as AI increasingly filters information for people, brands that are meaningfully different and clearly communicated gain the advantage. That lesson applies to Thai brands of every size.

The big picture: a record year for brand value

Kantar released its Kantar BrandZ Most Valuable Global Brands 2026 ranking, the 21st edition, in mid-May 2026. It puts the combined value of the top 100 brands at US$13.1 trillion, up 22% on the previous year and a record for the ranking.

This is also the first year that Google, Microsoft and Amazon crossed US$1 trillion in brand value at the same time, joining Apple. The minimum value needed to enter the top 100 is the highest it has ever been.

  • Google: US$1,484.9 billion (+57%)
  • Apple: US$1,380.3 billion (+6%)
  • Microsoft: US$1,111.8 billion (+26%)
  • Amazon: US$1,022.8 billion (+18%)
  • NVIDIA: US$814.9 billion (+60%)

AI is the main driver

Google returned to No. 1 for the first time since 2018. Kantar links its growth to Gemini being built into its products, agentic search features and data centre investment. NVIDIA grew 60% on demand for AI chips.

AI-native brands moved sharply too. ChatGPT’s brand value rose 285%, the largest increase in this year’s ranking; in the history of the top 100, only BlackBerry in 2008 grew more. Claude debuted at No. 27 with a brand value of about US$96.6 billion.

Still, Martin Guerrieria, head of Kantar BrandZ, notes that AI both accelerates growth and makes marketing harder. The brands doing well use AI to filter consumer signals and connect them to business decisions.

Meaningful difference when machines help choose

Kantar’s central point is that as AI systems increasingly search, summarise and weigh information on people’s behalf, being meaningfully different matters more, not less. A brand that looks like every competitor is easy to overlook, by people and by machines.

Guerrieria put it simply: “In a market this fragmented, sustained growth is coming from clarity.” That means clarity of position, of message and of visual identity.

This links to how people now find brands. Search results, social feeds and AI assistants all rank and summarise options before a person sees them. A brand with a vague message gives these systems little to work with, while a brand with a clear, repeated idea is easier to describe and recommend.

Signals from Asia and other categories

Twenty-three of the top 100 brands are from Asia, close to a quarter of the list. Tencent returned to the top 10 at No. 8 after growing 45%. Kantar points to Chinese brands such as Tencent, Alibaba and TikTok as growing because they act quickly on consumer signals instead of waiting for perfect information.

In other categories, Zara overtook Nike as the most valuable apparel brand, and Hermès overtook Louis Vuitton in luxury. Financial services grew on the back of traditional banks such as Chase and HSBC, showing that established brands can still grow when they are clear about what they stand for.

What it means for Thai businesses

Most Thai brands do not compete at the trillion-dollar level, but the same principle applies. As customers start asking AI assistants which shop or product to choose, those systems draw on what brands have published. Brands that describe themselves clearly and consistently across channels are more likely to appear in the answer.

Meaningful difference does not mean being strange or loud. It means having a reason customers remember for choosing you, and expressing that reason consistently through your name, logo, colours, tone of voice and website experience.

The lesson about speed is worth considering too. Many Thai businesses spend a long time waiting for complete data, when small tests and learning from real results might give answers faster.

Practical steps you can take now

Start by checking how clear your brand looks to outsiders before investing in a new identity.

A refreshed identity can help, but only once the underlying idea is clear. Design makes a clear position visible; it cannot create one from nothing.

  • Write your brand position in one sentence, and test whether staff and customers understand it the same way.
  • Check that your logo, colours, fonts and tone are consistent across website, social media and packaging.
  • Ask AI assistants about your product category and see whether, and how, your brand is mentioned.
  • Publish web pages that explain your products, services and differences plainly, so both people and AI can understand them.
